ABOUT THE HEALING PATHS

REIKI:
Reiki addressing the cause rather than the effects of disease and illness. It alleviates pain, stress and anxiety, speeds the healing process and promotes revitalization of the body, mind and spirit complimenting all forms of therapy.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Energy”. It is a nonintrusive technique for stress reduction and relaxation that simultaneously promotes healing using the age-old practice of “laying on of hands”.

Reiki is not massage or hypnosis, but rather a technique that addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully promoting balance within and working on the cause rather than the effects of dis-ease and illness.

Life Force Energy:
Many Cultures including the Japanese, Chinese, Indians and Egyptians embraced the belief that life energy flows through the body, deeply affecting our physical, mental/emotional and spiritual health.

This energy has also been referred to as Ki in Japan, Chi in China, and Prana in India. In the West it has been referred to as bio-energetic, electromagnetic energy, or simply, H.E.F. - the Human Energy Field. Spiritualists and philosophers have referred to it as the astral light, or auric-field.

Whatever the name, there is a widespread understanding that this universal energy flows through all living things, and disruptions or imbalances in its flow can correlate to physical, mental and emotional illnesses. The healing art of Reiki addresses these imbalances to support good health and well-being.
Benefits:

TONAL HEALING OR RESONANCE THERAPY:

Resonance Therapy is one of the best ways to open and align the Chakras. Each Chakra is in tune with a tone that balances it. The fundamental balancing of our Chakras brings total well-being; physically, mentally and emotionally. The tones can be made by the healer or by an instrument, such as Singing Bowls. The classic example of resonance is having two tuning forks of the same pitch, one being struck will actually start the other vibrating so that it begins to resonate with a note. The first fork is called a "generator" of sound, and the second fork is called a "resonator". A secondary definition of resonance refers to the way an object responds to the sounding of a given note. The ability of a singer to create resonant tone lies in their being able to adapt body and mouth to the note being sounded, giving that note maximum effect and amplification by understanding the needs of the note's pitch and tone. If one sees the person using sound to heal as a "generator", their ability to facilitate healing in other people lies in their understanding the effect that resonance has upon the human organism, and learning to produce whatever note or tone is necessary to create the resonance of healing. There are even many cases of Toning partially healing or restoring hearing.

There is a definite correlation between the use of tone and overtones, the healing power of these sounds and the ability to experience one's full spectrum of sound with clarity.

SHIATSU

Shiatsu literally means finger-pressure. Shiatsu may be understood best as a combination of acupuncture's meridian stimulation and Anma (massage). Shiatsu was developed as a Japanese massage technique. It is very effective and easy to apply. Shiatsu is based on the theory of yin/yang and the 5 elements. Knowledge and understanding of this theory is essential to make a proper diagnose. Shiatsu is typically given on the ground on a futon or a table. This asks a lot of physical skills from the therapist.

History

In China, a doctor wasn't paid to give treatment to ill people but to keep a person healthy. As soon as a person became ill, he got his treatment for free. The health care was basically preventive. There were 5 types of treatment: acupuncture, medicines and herbs, curving with stones, moxa and anma (massage). Shiatsu is derived from anma. It was recommended for people living in the center of the country, near to the yellow river. In this area the culture was most developed and people were doing more mental than physical work. This is the same situation we face today. The Japanese looked to the Chinese culture for the origins of many of their disciplines. They united the arts of anma and acupuncture and developed it into "shiatsu" meaning finger pressure.

Finger pressure

Shiatsu literally means finger pressure. Natural body weight is used when pressure is applied on special points on the body. Through this pressure the energy flowing in the meridians is influenced. This energy is called chi.

Chi

Chi by itself is invisible, but the way chi works can be seen in the body. When a wound is healing 'just by itself' it is the work of chi. Traditionally everything was seen as an expression of chi. Chi is the origin, the power of live. When chi stagnates, the body becomes ill.

Meridians

Meridians are channels of chi. Sometimes they follow the same line as muscles or blood-vessels. There are twelve main meridians. Each meridian corresponds with an organ and is named after that specific organ. Triple heater however is an exception. This meridian corresponds with the relationship between a few organs. The meridian is not only connected to the organ, but also to the eastern concept of the function of that organ. Large intestine for example takes care of secretion. Emotionally it is related with lost, parting e.g. a collector can have problems like constipation. Spending a lot of money also can affect the large intestine. The functions of the meridians are to:
  • control the movement in the body (blood, gas, air, water)
  • connect the arms, legs and head with the trunk
  • communication from inside to the outside of the body (and from the outside to the inside) and from up to down (and from down to up)
  • control the regulation of the organs.
Treatment
There are four means to make a diagnose:
  • bo-shin: looking to the shape and color of the body.
  • mon-shin: asking question about the history of the disease, habits and preferences
  • bun-shin: listening to the sound of the voice and smelling the body and breath
  • setsu-shin: touch, massage
Setsu-shin is the most important one. The hara and back, pulse, tongue; special tsubo's and manipulations of the joints are used. Often diagnose and treatment is the same. During the massage the therapist gets information that he uses for diagnose. The diagnose will change by time because the energy is changing. The information the therapist gets, he can use immediately for his treatment. This is a big difference with acupuncture.

Another important difference with acupuncture is the physical contact. The patient experiences the deep and intense support. If he feels safe enough he will show problems that are normally hidden. This is very important, because behind every 'pain' that asks to be cured, there is another 'pain' hidden. Giving attention to this vulnerable problem is the beginning of recovering.

SHAMANIC HEALING

Shamanic origins can be traced back to 6,500 BC and as such, it can truthfully be described as the real "old time religion." A Shaman maintains a tradition of walking between this and other worlds and then acts as a bridge between worlds. The Shaman uses the knowledge gained from this experience when working in the community or with a client for psychic, emotional, physical and mental health or for exploration, and discovery of potential futures.

What is a Shaman?
Many people know the word "shaman" but there is some ambiguity about the word itself. Anthropologists say that the word "shaman" comes from the Tungus people of Siberia. It is also said that "shaman" originally comes from the word "saman" meaning "exalted". Keep in mind, however, that this explanation came from anthropologists 50-100 years ago (when much of the original writing and observations of shamanic culture were brought to light in the western mind). Many of them were white Christian men with certain biases against non-Christian lifestyle. I hesitate to say that the word "shaman" was the word for their people's spiritual healer. Many times indigenous people (including pagan pre-Christian Europeans) did not want to tell their oppressors any sacred vital information. Sometimes they would give false information purposefully, to protect their sacred rites, and their lives.

If “Shaman” does come from the word "saman" (exalted), it describes a state of consciousness, not a role. The whole idea of Shaman culture is to be able to connect with the Divine through elevating ones consciousness and connection to all things.
In recent times the word "shaman" has been adopted by many people as the generic term for Nature centered, ecstasy based, spirituality. Please remember, "shaman" is a word describing one group of people, there are thousands of words that have been used, and can be used, to describe these emerging humans.

To honor Nature and achieve a connection with all things, we don't need doctrines, a priest, or a monk, or even a shaman to pray for us. We were each born with an inherent connection to the Divine. Understand that there is a difference between Nature and culture. Humans have always come up with ways to live with Nature. They have had different languages, prayers and gods, and invariably, they end up saying that their way is best way. There are, however, truths, truths that cut through all religious beliefs and cultures. These truths are reflected in Nature.

Once a person opens their mind and heart to the truth that the world around them, they can see directly into them, freeing them from the need of an interpreter. Religions tend to want people to believe that the figurehead is needed to assure communication, or even worse, that the figurehead is the only one who can communicate. They seem to ignore the fact that each person on the planet is by definition connected to Nature and, if you follow physics, is connected to ALL things at the sub-atomic level. The point of religion (from the Latin "to tie again") is to support each person in their practice of letting the Nature outside of them talk to, and guide, the Nature inside of them. Humans have become so self-absorbed that we have forgotten the great power that we live in every day.
The path to becoming a Shaman varies from group to group but there are themes. Each community teaches their shaman apprentices differently but there are two ways that seem most consistent. One is to learn how to be a Shaman from a master shaman. The other is to learn from the spirit world, the ghosts of dead shamans, the trees etc.Generally, there is a "calling" that happens in some way. A person could be called to follow the path of the shaman in two typical ways, to come from a family of shamans, or to have a spontaneous calling such as a near-death experience, a sickness or, for the Akawaio people of the Amazon, epilepsy is a sign of a possible shaman. There are many people who could be eligible to "try out" to be a shaman but this does not mean that all who attempt to do so will be successful. Just as it is probably wise in our society to warn a person not to become a doctor unless she/he is willing to be totally dedicated to the profession, it is not advised to become a shaman apprentice unless she/he is prepared to submit her/his mind to the vacillating and demanding needs of the spirit world. To achieve a receptive condition to learn how to perceive- requires training, technique and discipline. The Shamanic calling is a serious profession, and it takes time to learn. For those that did not grow up with a spiritual connection to Nature, they must learn how to heal their own hearts, and then learn to think and feel the world as a part of Nature. This is the foundation upon which shamanic training can rest. This takes time. Most typically must be willing to dedicate at least five years of their life to the unfolding of their shamanic wings. Learning to become a master, one who is at one with their Nature, takes a lifetime.

The benefits are many. It has been a wonderfully challenging walk of healing and assisting people in finding their power and now assisting others who have been called in completing the circle.

Soul Retrieval

In contemporary society it is not uncommon for us to arrive in adulthood with a pervasive sense of loss of trust accompanied by a long list of betrayals and disappointments. While there are currently a wide range of therapies available to assist us in the healing process, most of them address the state of mind. Some are just beginning to address the effects on the body and little or nothing is being done to treat the whole being, mind, body and spirit. It is easy to see why many are turning to the ways of the indigenous peoples in an effort to find health once again. Shamanic practice of Soul Retrieval has effectively addressed and treated impairment of this connection for many millennia.

Shamans view most psychological imbalances as an indication that soul loss has occurred. Traditionally, if a community member experienced depression, loss of energy, sickness, or malaise, the Shaman would immediately consult with his Spirit Guides to determine if soul-loss had indeed occurred or, in the case of a Master Shaman like Walks In Power, use their connection to all things to see into the situation directly. In addition, he would ask very specific details about the individual's life, including stories from early childhood through adulthood. The shaman would listen for clues leading to either an event or a series of events where the loss may have occurred.
Summoned to the sick bed, the North American Shaman first turns his attention to discovering the cause of the illness. Two principal kinds of diseases are distinguished; those due to the introduction of a pathogenic object, and those resulting from 'soul loss'. The treatment in the two cases are essentially different.

In the first, the effort is directed to expelling the cause of trouble, in the second to finding and restoring the patient's fugitive soul. In the latter situation the Shaman is absolutely necessary, for only they can see and capture souls. , In addition to Shamans, in the societies that have Medicine Men and Healers, these can treat certain maladies, but 'soul loss' is always the business of Shamans. (Mircea Eliade excerpted from "Shamanism")
Typically, if he determined that soul retrieval was in order, the Shaman would prepare during the day and typically journey for the lost soul during the night in total darkness. This was usually done inside the client’s house or dwelling. In North America the Shaman would usually prepare through prayer, meditation, fasting, and the avoidance of certain foods and other impurities. One or more assistants were there as well, to drum and watch over the Shaman's physical body while he journeyed into the Spirit World. After all the preparations had been completed (which may have included saging, gathering witnesses, singing and chanting) the Shaman would journey to the Lower, Middle, or Upper Worlds, being guided and protected by his helping allies. He would look for the lost piece or pieces of the recipient’s soul and when he had fully recovered them, the Shaman would blow the energy back into his (clients) body, often into the heart area and the top of the head. At this point, any necessary instructions would be communicated, but most likely the client would be given into the care of his family and friends while the shaman retired to a resting place.

In today's Western Culture we are expected to 'maintain appearances' even during times of extreme stress. Even illness or death of a loved one doesn't excuse one from the daily responsibilities of being in the world. It is often at mid-life when the expectations placed upon us are seriously evaluated and when the trauma’s long passed resurface. It has been our experience that this commonly happens when the individual has found a time an place of relative safety from which they can begin to heal.
